Dear Parents/Guardians, It is hard to believe that we are already at the midterm break and fast approaching the winter season. I hope all our families get to enjoy the Hallowe’en break, which begins next Thursday 24th October with school closing at the usual time and re-opening on Tuesday 4th November. Board of Management News The Board of Management met on Wednesday 15th October and undertook its annual review of the school’s Code of Behaviour. There are no changes to the policy which is available to parents on the school website. The Board spent considerable time discussing financial issues at the meeting and attempting to draw up a budget for this school year. In short, the Board is unable to run the school on the level of funding provided by the Department of Education, currently €220 per pupil. While a budget has been agreed for this year it is totally dependent on parental contributions and fundraising. The Board wishes to acknowledge the ongoing financial support from the vast majority of our families and urges parents who do not support the school financially to consider doing so. The Board welcomes the budget increase of €50 per child in capitation funding but notes that the Cost of Living Grant, which schools have been receiving in recent years to keep them open, has been abolished. In real terms this means that the school has only received a €13 increase per child in the budget. This is far short of the equalisation with secondary school capitation required to eliminate parental contributions and fundraising. The Board of Management is pleased to announce that planning permission for our Special Classes has been submitted to Laois County Council. Once planning is received work will then commence on obtaining a fire certificate and disability access certificate for the project. This will then allow the Board to request approval from the Department of Education to progress the project to tender stage. Parents Council The Parents Council recently held their AGM in the school. Many thanks to the parents who attended on the night. Sincere thanks to last year’s committee for all their work. Carmel Keane continues as chairperson and we wish Carmel and her committee every success in the year ahead. The committee have already been busy and have organised the following:
Sincere thanks to the vast majority of parents who have now paid for their child’s resources. A very small number of payments remain outstanding. Please contact the school office before Friday 25th or at latest by Friday 7th November to arrange payment. If any parent is experiencing genuine financial difficulty please contact the school. Junior Infant Enrolment Applications for junior infants for September 2026 is currently open and will close on Friday 24th October. Application forms are available from the school office or on the school website. It is also possible to click on our web enrolment link on the website to submit applications. Swimming Swimming for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes began early this year as the swimming pool will close towards the end of November for repairs. Please remember they are swimming for eight weeks and not the normal six. Junior infants, senior infants, fifth and sixth classes will swim in the New Year with details for parents in the December newsletter. Computer Classes Our computer classes with Riomhaire Tech are up and running for 3rd to 6th class. The classes as usual will run for 26 weeks in total. The cost per child is €60. Parents can pay at any stage up until Easter 2026. Football / New GDO The Cumann na mBunscol Football leagues are now drawing to a close. Well done to all the boys and girls who participated and sincere thanks to the teachers involved. Two of our teams have qualified for the finals in O’Moore Park next Tuesday. Our Division 2 girls team play at 12pm and our Division 2 boys team play at 2pm. The players will be bussed into the games but will need to be collected from O’Moore Park after the games are finished. Parents are welcome to collect and bring siblings to watch the games. A big thank you to The Heath GAA for providing the school with our new football coach, Molly O’Brien. Molly replaces Darragh McEvoy and we wish him well as he starts his teaching career. Molly will visit the school every Friday for the rest of the year and provide junior infants to fourth with a weekly football session. Cross Country The annual school cross-country races will commence at lunchtimes after Hallowe’en for 1st to 6th classes. There will be one race each week for six weeks with a little distance added each week. We hope that all children will participate and enjoy the runs. School Conkers The conkers league is now in full swing! Well done to all the children who have participated in recent weeks. The conkers league reminds us about autumn and over the midterm, it would be a lovely idea to take children on a forest walk or plant a conker/acorn and watch your own tree growing. Reading Month The month of November is reading month. The school encourages children and parents to get reading for the month. Activities in school will include book swaps, daily challenges, quizzes and paired reading. With regard to the paired reading in the infant classes, junior and senior infant parents are invited to come in on the four Thursdays in November from 9.00 – 9.20 to read with their child. Full details of the activities taking place will issue when school re-opens after Hallowe’en. Fancy Dress Our annual fancy dress day takes place on Thursday 24th October. Children are welcome to wear in a Hallowe’en costume. Children who do not wish to participate should wear their school tracksuit. Quiet Breaks As part of the school's ongoing work on wellbeing the school is currently piloting the idea of quiet breaks. The idea behind these breaks is to offer an alternative to children to the busy nature of the yard at breaktime. The following activities are being offered to the children over the next six weeks: Monday - Games, Tuesday - Choir, Wednesday - Reading Club, Thursday - Art Club, Friday - Lego Club. Many thanks to the teachers involved who are giving up their own breaktimes to organise and supervise. Birthday Invitations If you wish to invite children to a birthday party or wish to be contactable so that your child can be invited please go to the school app and give permission for your details to be viewable on the class list. Parents can then contact other parents directly. If you are unsure how to do this, drop into the school office and Mary Catherine will be glad to show you. In conclusion, we thank all our parents and guardians for their support at the start of this school year and wish you all a relaxing midterm break. |
